Readers, I came across this site today and it definitely gave me a chuckle and I had to give it a link: JohnCow.com  It is a spoof off of the popular JohnChow.com domain and a great example of a way to get links and traffic by piggybacking off the success of another website.

Now getting links to a parody site may not be a big money maker itself but once you have a popular parody site you have the option of diverting some of the link goodness off to some of your other sites.  I know there are many more examples of parody sites on the web but I couldn’t think of any off the top of my head, what about you?

I see this site more and more every day. They also got a hot community listing at MyBlogLog because of how fast people are joining their community.

The site is funny and they make it work. I don’t know of any other sites that pull off a parody as well.

It’s good as a spoof but personally I don’t think it’s a good idea to start a business or a blog piggybacking off a popular personality even if it is John Chow. There is nothing like your own success, your own brand, built visitor-by-visitor, page-by-page.

Darren Barefoot has done two pretty solid parody sites with significant traffic:
http://www.getafirstlife.com is a spoof on Second Life (naturally) and http://www.iphatigue.com is an iPhone parody site.

I went to that site by clicking on their contest link. I am a regular reader of johnchow.com and was surprised as how I missed this….two minutes later I saw its johncow and no John Chow..The whole concept is funny and nice. I am sure more people will come with such sites.

I like Johnchow.com and think this other site is pretty lame.

This piggy-backing thing is something to crow about! John Cow? Blogging Cow? It
all sounds udderly ridiculous! But hey, it’s the internet, anything goes!

I wonder how many of you noticed that the cow is purple, hence hinting at Seth Godin’s book. So it can be considered as a compliment to John to be considered as a purple cow (or maybe there’s humour in this, too)?

What a link bait.

I frequently type in misspelled words for the domain names, and found myself on a totally different website. Maybe some desperate folks out there probably implement this technique. I say it’s a good way to see your traffic increase, but in reality, the traffics bringing through this method usually only one time deal.

Visitors who visit a site that they not intend to in the first place usually never ever come back to such a website again, plus they probably retype in the correct domain name real fast, and yep, you can say the traffics from this method can only last a second long.

I think the most important ingredient for a visitor to revisit your website, and even probably sign up for your services, the ingredient is great content. Plentiful of great content is the main thing for your website to be successful.

It’s my 2cents :) .

creative band clever, but……………
isnt it a bit of a waste of time?

link bait should be about creating high quality relevant materials that actively encourage people to link to it. cheap humor burns out pretty quick

I think its a very clever idea but its also unfair, and also in my opinnion, insulting to John Chow. to make a resemblance between JohnChow and a JohnCow is very insulting. well, it would be to me anyway! I also agree with BLOGMYWAY.

How about Whitehouse.org (not .com!)

#21
Alex (08/24/07 at 6:47 am)

Not into the site at all.

It IS clever, but the blog has less impact now that John Chow has changed the look of his website. It’s like doing an impression of Sammy Davis Jr. while dressed like Dean Martin… well maybe not exactly.

Also, how can JohnCow say he’s not in it for profit when his blog is monetized exactly like JohnChow.com? If he removed all ads and still blogged, I’d believe that he was mainly in it for fun.

I’m surprised he hasn’t been sued.

I found johncow.com by accident, or rather by carelessness, as I was trying to get to johnchow.com.

To be honest I rather like the cow site, and I am pleased that they seem to be making money out of it. Let’s be honest, John Chow isn’t exactly doing anything productive of finished goods is he? So he can hardly complain when someone parodies and copies his format.

Both sites are good, but these days I find I read more of John Cow’s site because more often than not, John Chow is saying alot of the same things over and over. Anyone who has been blogging for some time and spent some serious time on SEO pretty much knows all the tricks Chow has employed to his success. Once the train is rolling it’s hard to stop even if you want to.

Cow has the humor part down, and I think his new blog design is awesome. It prompted me to work on my own design.

I thought John Chow was the one juming on the parody bandwagon, by writing a serious version of the original material on the John Cow blog.

SHARETIPSINFO

Hi everyone.

Now we have seen Sensex and NIFTY touching new highs, moreover we can say Life time high. Still we
have not seen any positive movement in IT SECTORS this is due
to weakening of dollar.

On one side we should appreciate that rupees is becoming stronger and stronger but dollar is what we all want.

Now we should try to accumulate IT stocks as sharp major up move is expected out of them. Buy on every decline PATNI, INFOSYS
or any IT stock.

Hope you make lot of money in that.

Regards
