The success of content submissions on social media sites is often dictated by the tone of the comments that take place early on. Even if a great piece of content gets a few nasty comments right off the bat it will have a very hard time succeeding and making it to the homepage.

Users often view the first few comments before even clicking through to the content and begin to form their opinion based off of them. If the comments are bad they will automatically assume that the content is bad too, since other members of the community also feel that way.

The problem with this is that some of the social media sites have audiences that are generally very immature. Sometimes even if the content is remarkable someone will come along that doesn’t agree with it and start flaming it in the comments. Others will see this and follow suit and before you know it your submission will be buried into oblivion never to see the light of day again.

If this is something that you notice happening to your submissions then start asking some of your friends on these social sites to read the content and leave positive comments early on. This will help set a positive tone for the submission and keep people from voting your stories down.

On the flipside of this, bad content won’t make the homepage just because there are a bunch of positive comments that have been left. So it’s not a technique that works if you’re trying to spam your horrible content to the homepage.

(IMO) It doesn’t hurt to leave the first comment for your own post.

The text box in Digg is sometimes too small to get the point across. Leaving the first comment for your own submission can help to clarify the reason why the submission is a winner.

It seems like most people who leave the first few comments are speaking directly to the person who posted the article.

Posting the first comment yourself can create the perception of wanting to start a conversation. Even if you don’t post the first comment, you should participate in the discussion and not just abandon the submission.

Commenting is the lifeblood of a blog. Here are some more tips for increasing comments.

I have taken the “no follow” tag off comments on all my blogs. This gives everyone who comments a link back to his or her site.

Turning off the Turing test has also helped increase comments. I moderate comments for spam, so why should a reader have to take that extra step?

I ran a comment contest on one of my blogs for a cash prize. This increased commenting and linking.

I contribute to carnivals and am a member of several blog rolls.

Of course, as you have said, nothing works unless you have the content.

Comments on social media sites seem to be a form of word of mouth marketing. Unfortunately not everyone leaves a comment and sometimes it is just the extremes that comment. But if the first thing a potential buyer/customer sees in a positive vs a negative comment it would definitely influence their decisions to buy.

Although comment spam is high these days (never mind email spam…) I agree with the suggestions Hawaii SEO and Cyber Celt have left. Moderating your comments not only lets you ensure no spam gets through, but allows you to read what people are posting so you can develop your content. Turning of the spam gaurd can be interpreted as showing faith in your readers which might go a long way for reputation and PR relationships.

Louis Vuitton is definitely a hot brand of handbags and accessories but I really prefer Chanel and this article just adds to my views I am not much feeling the styles, I really would prefer to have a Chanel or even a Chloe it would even cost me less.
