A couple of days ago I wrote the post about how to ask bloggers for links. While emailing can be a very effective way to get on a popular blogger’s radar, it is by no means the only way. There are a number of others ways to get these people to notice your content, here are a few of the things that have worked for me.

  1. Comments – One of the most effective ways to get a blogger to notice you is to comment on their blog. This is also a great way to get others to find your blog as well. It is important to make sure you leave well thought out comments that actually contribute to the conversation. If you just leave things like "nice post" no one will really pay much attention to you. Leave original, well thought out comments that intelligently add to the conversation.
  2. Trackbacks – Bloggers are generally egomaniacs, they like to see who is talking about them and linking to their content. Even if they aren’t egomaniacs a good blogger will always keep track of who is linking to them and talking about their posts. The key here is to contribute to the conversation in the same way that you would with comments. The blogger who you are linking to is just about guaranteed to read your post, this is your chance to "prove your worth" so make the posts really good.
  3. Email – We already covered this technique in the last post.
  4. Social media sites – Getting your content popular on social media sites like Digg and Delicious is a great way to get noticed. If this happens your content will be in front of thousands of bloggers and the links will come pouring in. Make sure your next few content pieces are extra good because you’ll have a lot of fresh new eyes and good content is the best way to keep them around.

There are millions of blogs on the web these days. Every day it’s getting harder and harder for new blogs to get noticed, follow some of these tips above and you’re sure to be in the fast lane for gaining new readers.

Do you have any other tips that have helped you get found by other bloggers?

Speaking personally as a blogger, the best way to get me to notice you is to *participate*.

At some level your question is akin to “how do I become popular at school?” and the answer is, as it’s always been, hang out with the cool, popular kids, integrate into their world, and gradually establish your own identity.

Now it’s obvious that “cool” is subjective, so it should be no surprise that the bloggers I think are cool and are worthy of backlinks are different to those that you, Cameron, enjoy, so it’s a great example of the fact that there are lots of niche blogospheres, not one. In my area of business and tech, there are lots of blogs but a relatively small number that are really valuable.

One way to find them, btw, is to use the blog rating score on ReviewMe or even just check out their backlinks on Google or Technorati.

But at the end of the day, find those bloggers in your market segment who have interesting things to say and have built up a readership, and get involved!

Dave, great response. Just to add on the “particpate” aspect I believe it needs to be done for genuine reasons. If you have nothing valuable to add then don’t even bother.

Great tips on finding the blogs!

meet them in real life… there may be some “blogging events”… meet them, get to know a “guru”…

I would not forget to add Stumbleupon.com to you suggestion for social sites to bring in readers. On the low-end, submitting an article there usually brings 300-400 pageviews and I just had one go for over 9000 yesterday. I’ve found it easier to get noticed there as opposed to del.icio.us or digg…

Bogdan – yep, another great one.

Rob – No doubt, SU is a great source of traffic and like you said it’s easier to get noticed on there. The problem is that SU traffic is usually only on your site for a couple seconds and it doesn’t produce the amounts of links that Digg does. None-the-less, it’s still a great source and thanks for bringing it up.

Criticizing them in any way will make them notice you. :-)

I’m a bit of a newbie, and don’t quite understand trackbacks, despite the mention in this post. Can someone elaborate?

Dave, a tackback is basically a link to a post on that authors blog from another blog. Some blogs have a trackback link by the comments area and when you link to their post they will show a snippet of what you wrote with a link back to your site.

Does that make sense?

Yes, I think I got it now as someone did a trackback to my blog, and so I saw my posting on their site. I know the advantage for me is that my post gets seen by a wider audience. What is the advantage to the person whose blog my post appears on?

Dave, the advantage is that the author notices you. I’m willing to bet that you visited the site that linked to you right?

THis post helped a lot. But emailing some bloggers just doesn’t work. Although nice content surely brings some great traffic!
