So you’re launching a site on a brand new domain?! What are you, a masochist?
And you haven’t even made any major link bait yet? What are you, trying to fail?
Just kidding 
Beating the sandbox and gaining trust is no easy feat. In my experience, the hardest part is getting started. Well if you can clear out a few hours in your afternoon, here are four easy trusted links you can get that new domain today. (Actually, there are two bonus links, that makes six easy trusted links!)
1) A lesser-known Wikipedia page: Do you have an investment-related site? Do not try to add your homepage link to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment or en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock. Instead, add the deep link to your "The Forward P/E Ratio Explained" page from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PE_ratio… it’ll have a much better chance of still being there tomorrow.
2) The Squidoo lens for your site’s topic: Parasite SEO at its best. The Squidoo domain is gaining IBLs and trust quickly, and any page on the domain will inherit some of its trust. Bonus points if you actually take the time to make the lens useful, and link out to other authority sites. Caveat: You only take full advantage of this trust by building a few links to the Squidoo page itself, giving it a bit of link pop independent of the root domain.
3) The three ultra-trusted directories: They charge for an editorial review, not a listing. One is specifically recommended in Google’s guidelines for webmasters; I’d bet my [insert valuable appendage here] that the other two are highly trusted, too… Yahoo!, MSN bCentral, Business.com
4) A juicy TLA link: I really, really like the publishers in TLA’s inventory that currently have zero or one links sold… why not get in there and gobble up the lion’s share of the link pop?
All done? Don’t rest on your laurels! Now that you’ve gotten the seven easy trusted links, you’d better go chase a hundred more hard ones. So get crackin’ on that link bait!

I’m surprised you’re endorsing spamming Wikipedia.
Not that I’m saying not to, but wow.
Spamming? Certainly not.
If you spam, it’ll get removed faster than you can check your Bloglines.
But DO add your relevant resource to a relevant page… and it’ll help if it’s a page that doesn’t get a lot of link submissions.
I finally went ahead and bought a link in the Yahoo! Directory. I’ve been looking for ways to boost my traffic and I think this will really help it. I hope I’m accepted into the directory.
I’d love to know what a link from Snopes.com is worth – and if it’s just linking to a PDF file is it worth anything at all?
Surely it would be a pretty good site to get a link from.

Remember, the KEY is *good content*. Then you can start link building…
If you provide good content to wikipedia.. then its no problem at all. You have a better change with deep pages and specific topics ofcourse.
Squidoo is growing fast indeed, but there are some more interesting sites.. Simply make everwhere a good profile.. take some time for it.

You could sit around pondering the woes of being called a spammer, while all of the other bleeding edge marketers are out there adding links and building pages.

But please make your page relevant to Wikipedia, not some ugly MFA site.
Along with this I would recommend going through the entire product offering at the major SE’s such as their Local Directories, etc. The most important element remains relevant and meaningful content if you expect to maximize youe link building efforts.
You don’t need to worry about spamming Wikipedia. All you have to do is to come up with really interesting information and hope it stays. If there will be even a hint of spam, it will be gone in no time with the help of so many good doing administrators and users. It might be a very good exersize to get your link to Wikipedia.

are you saying that paid for links have any SEO value? Everyone I read from Matt Cutts to Eric Ward seems to say that they don’t (assuming that I’m not misinterpreting them!)

Good tips. I don’t recommend Blog Link Generator. I just tested on a brand new domain. It did not show any backlinks in 2-3 weeks. It is just spamming irrelevant blogs. If you want quality links, better to visit blogs related to your theme and share your views there.
Interesting. Can you comment on the quality of the page hits you get? Seems to me being hit by a fire-hose of people only marginally interested in your content (and by extension ads) is just going to lower your click-through rate…
