I have seen some recent success with building links to secure a second indented listing on Google’s first page of search results.  Here are some tips for that can cause Google to grab a second page from your site and indent it as a second result giving you two results ranking for the same search phrase…

- Do a search for "your keyword phrase" and find the second page on your site that is ranking for this term.  Hopefully it is somewhere within striking range, let’s define that as the secondary page ranking currently in the top 50.

- Build external links directly to this secondary ranking page using mainly the link text "your keyword phrase" that you are trying to rank for.

The result you are looking for is Google grabbing this secondary page and indenting it below your primary ranking page which Google seems to like to do.  This link building strategy seems to work well as Google seems to favor ranking a second page from a website that is already ranking for this same keyword.  What has your experience been with securing a second listing on Google?

I’ve found that works great…provided that when you’re getting those backlinks, that you don’t use the exact text that your internal pages use…meaning this….
If you’re internal link to the page you’re trying to rank for is “Blue Widgets”, then when getting backlinks from other sites, use a different link text…If you’re internal link is “blue widgets” and all outside links link to that page with the exact phrase of “blue widgets” then it tends to bury that page (over optimization), but if those external backlinks are things like “find blue widgets” and “blue widgets are here” etc, seems to do pretty good for getting that second page listing.

Patrick … this is a pretty good strategy but I’d say it is worth going after if your index page is in the top 5 or else you’re splitting your efforts when instead you can focus on one page to make it rank well.

I used to get second indented listings automatically without effort, but some of them disappeared some time ago. I had thought about using this technique to try and get them back, but I hesitated for fear of over optimization. I will give it a try. Thanks

Patrick – quit giving away all the secrets!!! :)

You’re right on the money. Here’s an example where I have a double indent

Example
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=link+building+training

In this case the secondary page ranked first, and the homepage indented. I have a suspicion that the search words need to appear in both, plus inbound HVLs in order for it to happen.

A little off topic but after reading about you on TechCrunch I have a practical question.

I have not used your ‘Text Link Ads’ yet on my Blog ‘Serge the Concierge’.

I have tried both Google (before) and Yahoo (currently). Can you use ‘Text Link Ads’ at the same time than Google and/or Yahoo Ads.

Take care

Serge

I recently blogged about my observation about how Google groups first and second (and third?!) results together.

I have a friend that always clicks on indented results first. I have talked to him about it and he says he know’s the site will have more content that the others and to a degree he’s usually correct.

I have found the easiest way to get a split result is to also crosslink the two pages using a nice anchor text and a few inbounds to the second page.

Has worked a treat for over 3 years. It’s an easy (often overlooked) way to maximise traffic to your site.

The algorithm excuted behind every search by google is very complex and it’s not that easy to understand.

If I’m not wrong, you mean to say that “for a particular keyword, google first brings the index page on top and than its link pages ( depending upon how near the page is from the keyword) ignoring other websites having the same kyeword listen in index page?” That’s pretty unfair from google. However, I’ve not tried that. I’ll come back with my own experience sooner or later.

In the mean while, I’m going to bookmark your blog for future posts on SEO from you. Hope you will continue to post your experiences with google search engine :)

There are numerous ways to promote your site. The search engines are the primary source of e-commerce traffic on the Web.

Having other sites link to you will be essential in accomplishing these main objectives:
# Getting the search engine spiders to find your site.
Getting the search engine spiders to crawl your site more frequently.
Getting the search engine spiders to crawl your site more deeply (i.e., this will get them to look at more than just your site’s homepage.

By submitting one’s website to the search engines you become more visible in the search engines. However, this is becoming less and less effective in accomplishing the above mentioned objectives.By asking other sites to link to you, which shows the search engines that your site is important enough that others are willing to place their reputation on it. In this way, when one web page links to another, it is as though that page is voting for the other.
Major search engines, including Google, AOL, MSN and Yahoo!, will look at both the number of pages linking to your site and the quality of those pages to determine your siteâs relevancy. Having good quality and quantity of links going to your site will drive the search engines to spider your site and also help improve your rankings for keyword phrases. Therefore, one of the most important things you can work on to gain higher rankings in the search engines is your siteâs own âlink popularityâ.

Link Popularity is necessary for any website to do well in the search engines. Building links requires experience, motivation, a lot of communication, and a lot of work. The best linking strategy you could possibly have for your website’s quality of incoming traffic and your search engine rankings is to seek out solid, permanent links on related pages.
This is known as reciprocal linking or “link exchange.”You agree to link to another site, in exchange for them linking to you. As a strategy for increasing the quantity of sites linking to you, it is very popular. You may be contacted by other sites if you have your email address posted somewhere on your site. Or, you can go out on the Web yourself and find some sites to trade links with.First, create a custom HTML page for linking, and link to it from your siteâs homepage.
Key facts to consider:
1)A quality link from a high-ranking site will benefit your site more than a large amount of links from only low ranking sites.
2)Links from site to site should be text-based (not images) using one of your main targeted keyword phrases.
3) Link popularity is not effective when used single-handedly as a marketing technique. You will need to work significantly on your siteâs text content and researching keyword phrases. Remember to develop and use targeted, popular keyword phrases throughout the text on your site, or have it professionally optimized.
Second, decide what keyword phrases you will use for the links pointing to your site. Links should always be keyword rich text, so use your best performing search terms according to what is getting the most searches in the major engines. You can use our keyword suggestion tool to discover which keyword phrases are getting high traffic.
Third, contact other site owners to discuss trading links. Because you have already established a relationship and rapport with certain people, they will be more inclined to want to link to your site. This will become reciprocal linking if you propose to list a text link to their site if they will in turn list a text link to yours.

Procedure of link building
(1.) Reciprocal Link Exchange = In this case we have to submit our site URL in the appropriate site in the submission page mentioned and In exchange we must have to put the Siteâs URL in any of our Site page. There should be regular check up of our Site URL as itâs not always confirmed that the respective site would maintain or keep our URL in its submitted page. Some time we have to submit the URL according to PR of the respective site. If we are submitting their URL in PR-4 page of our site then itâs necessary that they should also put our URL in PR-4 page.
(2.)1-Way Link Exchange = There are some sites which are providing the facility to submit our URL but in exchange they do not need any Link to be submitted in exchange.
(3.) 3-way Link Exchange = This way of Link Exchange is little bit different from Reciprocal Exchange. In this category we have to submit the URL of a site in any of our PR page and in exchange to this the Site Owner will include our URL in any 3rd Domain .This type of URL submission has some other affects on the PR of any site.
Bulk Email Posting: We have to make some advertisements related to our site and the services we provide. These emails are to be sent to the Email-IDs that are taken out by some Softwareâs Like Affiliate Finder Pro and Arelis. These Emails should have our URLâs and the information related to our site.
News-Letter: Newsletter is to be sent using different services and the work we do. These Newsletters should be more specific to our profile and the mission what we do.
We should regular change the matter and the contents of the newsletter.
Forum Registration and Postings; The most important part of Search Engine Optimization is Forums. We have to do registrations in the forums related to our site. In all the Forums we should give the signature in which we must have our URL and if possible main Email-ID of administrator.

The postings to forums should be more concerned and related to the topics on which we are posting.
The queries should be frequently asked about the Topics that are ongoing and the answers should be given to the questions specifically according to the topics.

All the answers and questions should have been signed specifically.
Link Building for Specific Keywords: In the coding of all the pages
We must put some specific keywords in META TAGS and we should target to these Keywords for making the Link building.
These keywords will be crawled and will give the result in upper pages.
Lead Generation: There should be some Lead Generation page which will bring leads to the present Home page of the site.
This can be used through some requirements page and submit pages from different Domains but which will point to the Home page of main site.

Google Sitemap: The sitemap for Google is to be maintained and is to be verified according to the URL submitted in Google.
The indexing of the site is maintained on daily basis and we must go through the guidelines provided by the Webmasters of

Google.
Blog Submission: To spread our link to different Domains and
different sites we should submit our content in web-blogs.
Blogs are major source that are crawled by search engines, we should always keep in mind to submit our site content in blogs related to our site.

It will help to boost the hits and incoming links on the site.
Article Submission: Articles pa major role in bringing traffic to the
site .We should submit all the matter or content of our site in the websites that are giving the facility to submit Articles in their directories.
In this submission also we should try to submit the content in related sites.
Ezine Ads: The online magazines and online ads are better source to
Incoming links to site. We should make online Ads in the websites which are giving the facility to make the ads and publish them over internet.
The Ads should be related to the content and the services that we provide and are mentioned in our site.
We should always check the Ads keep the track if they are published or not.

Now The Most Important thing i.e Your Page Rank
The Page Rank Of A Website depends solely on your inboud links. The PageRank of a website is calculated with the help of the following equation:

PR(A)=(1-d)+(PR OF LINK PAGE 1*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE1)+ (PR OF LINK PAGE 2*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE2)+…..+(PR OF LINK PAGE P*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE P).

Where A,is your website
D is a damping factor =0.85
link page 1,2…,P are the pages that has a link pointing to your website and can be found out by conducting a search on google with link:www.website.com.

Proper Link Exchange is the perfect way to improve your page rank on the net.A good page rank ensures better traffic which further enhances the website prospects on the net.
