An oft-overlooked link baiting method is as old as the Net itself: good, old-fashioned flaming. It works especially well in the SEO community. From a Threadwatch spanking of John Scott & Mike Grehan:

I don’t like to see my friends bicker back and forth, but I do enjoy
lurking at a good flame occasionally. Do you? If so, where are your
favorite places to read flames?

…It took me a while to learn it, but in the end almost everyone involved in the ongoing flames ends up looking like an ass, at least for a bit.

Of course, if you decide to go the flame-linkbaiting route, make sure it doesn’t contradict your branding efforts or reputation–link building shouldn’t exist in a vacuum, but instead is part of an overall marketing plan.

On the flip side, you can also get links by sucking up, but if you’re anything like me, you don’t have much stomach for it ;-)

Re: make sure it doesn’t contradict your branding efforts or reputation – yea this is exactly what I’ve been telling people during the writing class I did recently (if I may spam you some here are the keynotes for it: http://irishwonder.com/blog/2006/01/29/writing-for-seo-where-to-get-ideas/) – sure a link is a link no matter what but if you’re trying to sell a product or a service and your potential customers se the negative stuff about you how will it affect your sales?

Bob, I doubt it is Springer Forum Marketing. Just by virtue of the attacker not having a forum.

Wouldn’t a good old-fashioned conversation – back and forth accomplish the same thing without adding to people’s stress levels? Or am I missing out on the joy of linkbuilding & pissing people off at the same time? Do the links just feel better? :-)
