by Andy Hagans Reciprocal Links, Strategy with 21 Comments

*Disclaimer: the following is based on empirical observations only.

Well it appears that Jagger (1, 2, and 3) has sung its last song, and Google has settled down. Everyone and their brother (and their brother’s pet gerbil) will give you their analysis at the drop of a hat (see this – but not if you have a weak stomach). In case anyone is interested in my analysis:

1) Sites with a large base of reciprocals, by and large, got hammered. Yes, I am sure you can find an exception to this. (My guess is that a lot of the ‘exceptions’ were sites that had gained a lot of ‘trust’–e.g., older domains, and domains with other trusted links.)

2) Authority/TrustRank seems to be the trump card. Those biggie links — you know the ones, those from the PR8 authority site in your niche — are counting for more than ever. Likewise, links that should be worthless are looking more like they are worthless.

Good for you white hats — and for you gray hats that have managed to hoodwink your way into authority links ;-)

Absolutely, I’m amazed that people are still infected by the PR linking fever.

Hmmm, what are “PR” and “PR8″? Not familiar with the jargon. Thanks.

@Donatello
PR = Page Rank
It can be from 0 to 10. (8 it’s very good)

@Andy
My company site had a luck. (Maybe because it’s a old site)
I think today it’s really hard to manage which link it’s trusted which not.
What it’s the measure? (except non-spam sites)

What a great blog. I wish people posted more.

My older sites survived but the “similar sites” got smashed to peices. We taking on a whole new link statergy now jagger is over. Winding down the recips.

I saw some of my sites take a dive in early November and come back up just last week with out much help from me.

I think nows the time to get to work.

I was lucky to implament google analitics and sitemap before they were closed.

I currently believe it’s better to have quality links coming in over quantity.

Any other ideas??

I am in a Latin American real estate market that is totally dependant on the internet. Most, if not all of the top ranked sites for this industry have got all kinds of junk reciprocal links.
There was very little shakeup caused by Jagger.
Incidentally, the real estate market-place here has one keyword phrase that is far and away the one that you have to rank well for, so it is an interesting microcosm for SEO study.

Not only was reciprocal linking buried, but I also saw some carnage with the sites i worked on optimizing some internal linking structure. There was even carnage with the work I did to help some to build more quality content. Both of those sites have been up for some time & had decent inbound quality links. Jagger just made noise for me.

All the while, I’m seeing sites that possess no intrinsic value sit pretty atop the SERP. Sheesh. Can anyone tell me where i can snag some of those PR8’s?

And so I nearly closed my directory for reciprocal as most of them were from worthless sometimes spammy sites.

Now I’m not sure of reciprocal. Should I collect it or no? Or maybe I should rather find only strong links?

Is it better to do away with reciprocal links as a whole?

I just curious, if a site that have PR6+ link to our own site, and another site that PR0 also link to our own site, then what is the effect that make it differ?

Great article I have spent the last 2 months away on business and I wondered why both my sites PR rankings had dropped through the floor.
My Rolex Watch Shop website at http://www.rolexwatchshop.net had a PR rank of 4 prior to the revamp and my Bratz Doll Shop website at http://www.bratzshop.net had a PR rank of 3 before the shake up. So yes I agree with the others I am going to have to have another re think
